Welcome to Joey Scouts!

Joey Scouts is the first section of Scouting for boys and girls aged 5–8 years. It focuses on fun and friendship and is a gentle introduction to a world of adventures through Scouting. Young people can join anytime after they turn 5 years old, provided they are attending school full time.

The Joey Scout motto is HOPHelping Other People. This simple message guides everything we do.

Joey Scouts develop and express their individuality through safe and creative adventures, using their imagination and structured play. From creative crafting, outdoor adventures, and games designed to teach new skills in a simple and fun process, Joey Scouts is designed to give young people a sense of belonging and allow them to grasp an understanding of the world around them.

The Joey Scout Program

Meeting Structure

Our Monday evening meetings (5:30–6:30pm) follow a consistent structure that helps young children feel secure and engaged:

Badge System

Joey Scouts earn badges to recognize their achievements and encourage personal growth.

Peak Award

Joey Scout Challenge Award – The highest award in Joey Scouts, earned by completing challenges in all areas and showing leadership within the Mob.

  • Mob Badge – Being part of the Joey Scout Mob
  • Buddy Badge – Helping others and making friends

Joey Scouts work towards badges in five challenge areas:

What Your Joey Scout Needs

Uniform

The Joey Scout uniform consists of:

  • Navy blue shirt with tan section colour on sleeves, yoke, and collar
  • Navy blue activity pants or shorts
  • Enclosed shoes (for safety during activities)
  • Group scarf and woggle (provided by the group)

Uniforms can be purchased from the Scout Shop.

Equipment for Meetings

  • Water bottle
  • Hat for outdoor activities
  • Comfortable clothes under uniform for active games

  • Sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Torch

Linking to Cub Scouts

  • When Joey Scouts turn 8, they can “link” to Cub Scouts:

    • Overlap period where they can attend both sections
    • Special linking badge earned
    • Graduation ceremony to celebrate achievement
    • Smooth transition with friends

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my 5-year-old join if they're not at school yet?

Joey Scouts must be attending school full time to join.

Our leaders are experienced in helping shy children feel comfortable. Parents can stay until their child settles in.

Parents are welcome but not required to stay. Many parents of new Joeys stay for the first few weeks.
